Find Out Who is Filling the “Darren Sproles Role” for the Saints
The New Orleans Saints have three running backs to share in the workload, and it looks like veteran Pierre Thomas is poised to fill the “Darren Sproles” role of catching and rushing the ball on offensive plays.

Even though Thomas is currently listed as the third running back in depth, he had 35 touches last week against Atlanta, compared to the 32 total combined for Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson. Most of Thomas’ snaps were passes with only seven carries received. Thomas had this re report to the Times-Picayne (via NFL.com) about his new responsibilities.
Last year, I did some of that when Sproles went down. They knew I was capable of that. I know the system being here longer (than most). I know what I’m doing out there. They know I have (good) hands. I sold that last year, so I’m stepping up the plate. So no matter what they throw at me, I’m stepping up to that challenge.
In the Week 1 opener, Thomas had seven targets totaling 58 yards and ran 24 routes. According to Pro Football Focus, Thomas was the top No. 1 receiving back. What this all means from a fantasy standpoint is you’d better play in a PPR league if you own Thomas. His rushing yards alone will not reward many fantasy points. If you get points for receptions, this is where Thomas will add value.
Otherwise, Mark Ingram and Khiry Robinson are your guys if you score points just based on rushing yards and touchdowns. Still, any Saints running back could be a risky start because Drew Brees spreads the ball around so much, and the Saints are going to pass if they fall behind. With that said, I would recommend starting these guys with no higher than RB2 expectations in mind each week.
